Première grande ville rencontrée quand on vient de l'Ouest, Poznan n'a été sous souveraineté polonaise que peu de temps à l'époque moderne : devenue prussienne en 1792, allemande ensuite de 1815 à 1918, elle ne fut polonaise que grâce à la création par Napoléon du grand Duché de Varsovie de 1806 à 1815 seulement.  Elle présente donc tout naturellement des caractéristiques germaniques dans son architecture : cathédrale en "backsteingothik" (gothique de brique), Rynek (place du marché) immense, proposant à profusion bâtiments magnifiques de toutes époques anciennes, grands espaces verts laissé autant que possible à l'état naturel... A Poznan comme ailleurs, une Pologne moderne doit encore se construire, même si le travail est bien avancé : réseau de transports en commun très dense et en excellent état, centres commerciaux d'une modernité et d'une commodité encore jamais vues en Europe, réfections magnifiques et intelligentes.

Et puis on y trouve aussi des traits que apparaissent comme proprement polonais : population extrêmement jeune (venant d'Allemagne, où le troisième et le quatrième âges envahissent tout, le contraste est saississant), partout, une place réservée aux enfants, les arts graphiques et la musique partout présents dans l'espace public : affiches, spectacles, très nombreux monuments et mémoriaux à tous les conflits - et l'histoire de la Pologne n'en manque certainement pas - et, enfin, splendeur des Eglises et affichage de la ferveur catholique à chaque occasion.
